Chivas Regal’s history began in Scotland in the early 19th century. Its development spanned more than two centuries, combining family entrepreneurship, royal recognition, and innovation in blending whisky technology. The following is a summary of its key historical stages:
1. Origin and early development (1801–1850)
1801: Chivas brothers (James and John Chivas) founded a grocery store in Aberdeen, Scotland, specializing in luxury goods such as coffee, spices, French brandy, etc., and gradually introduced high-quality whisky.
1843: Due to the supply of high-quality goods (including whisky) to Queen Victoria, it was awarded the first "Royal Warrant", laying the foundation for the brand's noble genes.
Pioneer of blended whisky: In order to meet customers' demand for smooth taste, the brothers tried to blend different whiskies in the store's wine cellar and became early practitioners of the art of blending.
2. The maturity and global expansion of the art of blending (1851–1920)
The first blended whisky was launched: Royal Glen Dee and Royal Strathythan were launched in the 1850s, establishing the brand's technical route.
1909: Chief bartender Charles Howard created Chivas Regal 25, the world's first luxury blended whisky exclusively for the US market, which quickly became popular in New York's upper class.
Prohibition impact (1920): The US Prohibition led to the suspension of Chivas Regal 25 sales, but the brand maintained its reputation through underground channels.
3. Revival and formation of modern product lines (1930–2000)
1938: Chivas Regal 12 was launched for the US market, returning at a more affordable price and becoming a best-selling classic.
1950: Acquired Strathisla Distillery (founded in 1786), which became the core malt whisky source of Chivas Regal and was known as the "spiritual home".
1953: To celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, the Royal Salute 21 was launched. It was named after the 21-gun salute and aged in sherry and bourbon barrels.
1997: Chief bartender Colin Scott launched Chivas Regal 18 Years Old, featuring multiple blends and dark chocolate, floral and fruity flavors.
⚙️ IV. Innovation and globalization in the 21st century (2000 to present)
2000: Acquired by Pernod Ricard of France to accelerate global distribution
Product line expansion:
Chivas 25 years (2007): Replica of the 1909 formula, limited edition410.
Chivas Ultis (2016): The first pure malt blended whisky, paying tribute to five generations of bartenders
Environmental protection and cross-border cooperation: such as co-launching oak barrel watches with watch brand Bremont
Market performance: marketed in more than 200 countries around the world, with annual sales exceeding million bottles (12 years as the main force), Asia Pacific and Europe as core markets
V. Brand and cultural influence
"Angel's Share": refers to the evaporation of about 2% of the liquor each year during the aging of whiskey, which is romanticized as "Angel's Share"
Celebrity endorsement: Frank Sinatra, Javier Bardem and other stars publicly praised it, and the brand sponsored many superstar tours
Award certification: Chivas Regal 12 and 18 have won gold medals at the San Francisco Spirits Competition and the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) for many times.
